NATURAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS IN NIGERIA (V)

*DR. GODWIN IHESIE: “I am a medical laboratory scientist. And after practicing for 10 years, I saw a need for me to go into natural medicine. Mrs. Kafaru (late) as popular in the field and I approached her. He directed me to the late Pa Ebenezer Osidein, of the then Gbodiyan Health Care Centre in Surulere lagos. He was a renowned naturopath. When I met him, he showed interest in me. I had opportunities of traveling and that was how I kept on reading things on natural medicine and all that.

After two years, I came back to Mrs.Kafaru, she registered me with the Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board and she invited me to her clinic based on the fact that her work was becoming too much for her; that was in 1994.

After understudying her and the way she treats people, with my two years of study and exposure, she took me on and from then till she passed on, it was all nice.

*MRS. TOYIN OLUJINMI who is in her early forties missed her menstrual flow for three months and she was frantic. She promptly sought out her gynaecologist, who after series of tests informed her there was nothing wrong with her. Neither was she pregnant. “It really bothered me for a while for the doctor had concluded that it could be as a result of stress whereas I knew within myself I was not stressed in any way.

She then decided to go herbal and discussed with one of her friends who trades in herbal products from Ghana. “Though I don’t believe in all these claims and use of plants, herbs and the rest, but because I needed a solution, I was prepared to use them. I decided to try it and my friend gave me Great Swedish Bitters along with what I call Female Corrective Formula. Believe me, less than two weeks after, when I wasyet to exhaust the one and a half bottles, my menses resumed. I was so happy, actually ecstatic. Immediately, that changed my perception and belief of the potency of herbs.”

Later I sat down and reflected on the number of women out there with such problems and asked myself: Why can’t I help them? So I re-established contact with my friend who took me to Ghana, and enlightened me about herbs and gradually, I started by bringing some intothe country and because they do work, of which my clients testified, that encouraged me and with the backing of my husband, I established a herbal shop named “The Grace Health Medicine,” for it was God’s grace that helped restore my menses.

*ARISTERKING LEBE KALU: Chief Joseph Lambo must be proud in his grave now: One of his students has since carried on the torch from where his departed mentor left it.

Aristerking Lebe Kalu belongs to the Lambo school of thought and even earned a certificate of proficiency from the Medical Herbalist Headquarters situated at 41, Joseph Lambo Street, Oyingbo, Lagos, which was controlled by Lambo when he was alive.

Armed with that certificate, Aristerking opened shop at 12, Ovba Street, First Floor, Off Solomon Street, Solomon Bus Stop, Oriola, Alapere, Ketu, Lagos and began to consult.

To Aristerking, service more than money is paramount. “I am not after money but to prove a point, that herbs are good and in fact the best for cures throughout the world. I send my patients to laboratories for two reasons: so that I do not treat them blindly and two, to know what is actually wrong with them (for diagnosis) as orthodox medicine is good in that area.

I don’t hide my herbs from people and there is no spiritualism in my treatment. Whoever I treat, I make everything plain to the patient. For example I have branded preparations such as Aristerking Blood Purifier, Diabetic Solution, Fertility Booster – a herbal preparation. Its composition includes wild strawberry, camellia simensis, ginseng, potash and tobacco.

NATURAL HEALTH PRACTITIONERS IN NIGERIA (IV)

*DR. MARCUS GBOLAHAN DAWODU was born at Olowogbowo, Lagos Island. He had his early education at St.Mary’s Convent School, Holy Cross Primary and St.Thomas Primary School, all in Lagos. His post primary education was at Baptist Boy’s High School, Abeokuta and Baptist Academy.

After working briefly as a petroleum distribution and bunkering clerk at Total (NIG) Limited, Apapa depot, he proceeded to the University of Lagos, to study physiotherapy, graduating in 1977 with distinction in the physiotherapy department and management of medical and surgical conditions, a first in that faculty.

Since 1985, he has been involved in osteopathic and naturopathic practice. In 1994, he was listed as the first registered Osteopath in Nigeria.

*DR. LATEEF OLAYEMI KOLAQ: “I was born into alternative medicine practice because my father is still an alternative medicine practitioner based in Kaduna. Yet, I will say destiny has a hand in it because out of my father’s six children, I am the only one who took after him despite the fact that I am neither the first nor the last; I am the fourth.

All the drugs I use come from herbs. The herbs are sourced both locally and internationally. I have about three to four companies in China that supply me herbs. Sometimes I carry herbs from Nigeria to China for sale. It is a kind of give-and-take thing. The drugs are in powdered form or capsules. Whichever way, they serve the same purpose.

I have about 16 branch offices. All of them have doctors and consultants, capable hands who were all trained by me. Some of them spent seven to eight years under me as students. Our head office is in Ikeja.”

On Spiritualism: “In the olden days, people merged alternative medicine with spiritualism. Some people still do it today. That creates a very bad impression making some people think that an alternative medicine practitioner must be a spiritualist…I believe in prayer. I advise people who have spiritual problems to go and see their Pastor or Chief Imam. I don’t handle spiritual problems; it is health problems that I treat with herbs. It is not good to merge alternative medicine with spiritualism.”

On NAFDAC: “almost all the drugs I use here are with NAFDAC. They have accredited some…I believe that very soon, those that are yet to be accredited by NAFDAC will be accredited.
Dr. Kolaq is married with children.

*DR. H. OLUYEMI OLUSOLA: “The beginning of this outfit (SAYEMI) defies human understanding and logic. Sometime in July, 1996, the presiding Bishop of Living Faith church launched a creativity supporting scheme and announced to the congregation to apply for loans. On the last Tuesday of September 1996, I was writing my application when a voice came to me; ‘my son you don’t need money, but an idea to choke the devil! I replied and said ‘God I don’t have an idea.’

The voice came again and said; ‘turn the back of the paper now, and I will give you an idea.’ I did so and God dictated to me how to make food and spices. My first challenge was how am I going to cope? My educational background was Language Education, but this vision has to do with science! As if this was not enough, at the church the following Sunday, Bishop Oyedepo preached on ‘integrity in business’ and used Heinz as a practical modern day example. The following Monday, in a supermarket, I saw a product, labeled Heinz. I picked it up and checked the label, I saw boldly written on it, ‘Health Food!’…The following weekend, I saw an article in the newspaper, ‘your medicine is in your kitchen!’ That was how I settled down into research to the medicinal values of food.

The first thing I detested in the claim of herbal practitioners was the claim, ‘I inherited it from my father!’ That was why orthodox doctors make jest of us that our claims lack empirical proof. I made up my mind to change this, and that was why I invested in a lot of research. This has really helped my practice a lot.

DR. SANDRA EKWUNIFE: “My grandmother told me that when she got married, her mother was into herbal medicine. That she didn’t want to do it when her mother died. Her mother told her that if the work is calling you and you refuse to do it, nothing else you do will succeed. She told me that the work is calling me, that I may never have children unless I go into it. But I told myself I will never give in without a fight. Every pastor and anybody that sat me down for counseling, I used to tell them that I simply do not want to do anything that has to do with herbal medicine. I am an Anglican married to a Catholic. I attended Catholic Charismatic meetings. It was the reverend father that called me and told me that alternative medicine is not demonic, that what is demonic is the practice that people attach to it.”

That if you get bitterleaf, wash it and drink the water, that it will help you cleanse your system, suppress diabetes, open your arteries and veins, so that you don’t have arteriosclerosis. But when you get that bitterleaf, you jump up seven times, you climb a special mountain and offer sacrifices and ask something to help you heal with bitterleaf, it is all those practices that make traditional medicine fetish. But there is nothing fetish about it if practiced without such things. So instead of letting that knowledge die, I should rather be coming to the clinic at St.Leo’s Parish, Ikeja to share my experience with the reverend sisters there. For there is nothing wrong with the knowledge. That if I like, I can go back to the village to learn everything there is to learn, and then come back to Lagos. That I don’t need to carry a shrine with me back to Lagos, or dress up in rags, or wear only white for my medicine to work. He was trying to encourage me and he really got me there.

*TO READ FULL STORY OF DR.SANDRA'S STRUGGLE WITH BARRENESS, CLICK HERE: http://www.battle4baby.blogspot.com/

After I finally got pregnant (after 7 years of barrenness), my grandmother said I was ‘the only one that disobeyed the call and got away with it’ but my mother said I was ‘fooling myself.’ That if I don’t practice our people’s traditional medicine, and I go to Hong Kong, China and learn Chinese medicine, and carry Chinese herbs and come to Nigeria, and treat people with herb, that I am still a herbalist.

Today, I combine what I learnt from my mother, grandmother, Chinese medicine, then books. I read books a lot to practice. I can go on the internet; there could be this new German herb that clears the eyesight. And we don’t have it here. What do I do? I will log on. Transact the business with them, send them the money, they will send me the herb.

SOME SHOCKING SITUATIONS I HAVE ENCOUNTERED IN MY FERTILITY PRACTICE:

STRANGER THAN FICTION: SHOCKING REVELATIONS OF A NATURAL FERTILITY EXPERT
Fertility expert and Perfect Herbals boss, Dr Sandra Ekwunife disclosed how some women who pretend they are looking for the fruit of the womb, do not even have wombs to carry a baby and their husbands are ignorant of it. Such women, she said, will never submit themselves for scan.Men that are trapped in this type of deceit, spend money and time, without knowing where the real problem lies.

Ekwunife said she had come across such in Ikeja and in Abuja and was shocked at-how pretentious some women can be. She said they knew their womb was completely damaged or removed entirely during an abortion and yet went into marriage.Instead of telling their husbands, they keep it a secret, meanwhile everybody is doing all sorts of things to see if they can conceive and bear children. She spoke on this and a whole lot more.

Excerpts:Women without wombsI am telling you these things we are doing, most of the time, people misunderstand you. When somebody comes for medicine and you tell her to go and pray, it is like why is mine different? After all, she gave my friend some medicines and she took in. Why should mine be prayer? Some will come, you don't just give medicine. Some people will come and tell you a tall story, all they are saying is a lie. Bring your test, they are giving you stories. I insist they must provide a test.I may collect samples by myself, I go and test and I see another thing. Some wives are just there deceiving their husbands. There are some that don't have wombs. Later, they will start telling stories, when they were younger, they had an abortion, they nearly died, a major operation was performed, and because the abortion was incomplete then, the remains of the foetus was getting rotten in the womb, and the womb got infected, and they had to remove it entirely in order to save her life. This same woman that knows this will marry and will be dragging a man around for 15 years.

When she walks in and she has done all the tests and there is nothing wrong with her, you look at her, send her to scan, she won't. She will tell you plainly that she doesn't like doing scan. Because scan would likely detect what is happening. When you have your doubts, you examine her physically, the cervix would be absent. When you can't touch a cervix, it means something is wrong. Either there is an atrophy of the womb, as in the womb shrinking to an abnormally small size. It gets so small, that the cervix cannot be felt any longer from outside examination or the womb is absent totally. And they know, they want to be in marriage. Why not convince your husband to adopt for God's sake and save the man the stress? If you stay with people who are looking for children, if you should have contact with them on daily basis, you cry for them.

I have been affected, I know how it feels.(CLICK HERE TO READ HER STORY AT: http://www.mybattle4baby.blogspot.com/ ) I battled it for seven years, just think of what I went through, that when I tell you, you close your ears, then think of people that have done so for 23 years, yet there is no hope, yet nothing is wrong with them.Spiritual problemSome are spiritual problems and it is not even every spiritual problem you can handle. Sometimes, there would be a case you want to dabble into, you will be warned to step off. You have your own guardian spirit, you have your guardian angel, only that some people don't sense theirs, or maybe they do. I have mine, it is a matter of having a relationship with your spirit, it tells you. You may want to go out, a voice will tell you don't go anywhere.Six invisible childrenThere are some people you will see today, they walk in here, you see six children behind them crying. You say what is all these? You will be wondering what is happening, still you start talking with her. She may be lying. Another spirit will be telling you what happened. In the case of the woman with six invisible children following her that came to my office, those children were supposed to be her children, but she was tied. Her womb was sealed that she won't conceive. Those were her children, everywhere she goes, they were following her. All it takes is for the spiritual problem to be taken care of.And let me tell you something, demons can never remove demons. When demons are troubling a woman, and you go to a witchdoctor, you are telling a witch to kill a witch, do you think that is possible? Think of it when somebody is telling you to harm your best friend or your colleague. Look, it is not possible, you are just simply going to compound the problem. There is spiritual warfare, there is.Barren for nine yearsA woman walked into my office one day with her husband. She had been childless for nine years. When I looked at her forehead, I saw the drawing of a serpent. I asked her husband to look at her forehead if he can see anything. He said he could not see anything. But I asked her what her problem was, she started telling a lot of stories why she could not have a baby which were all lies. She has been dragging her husband up and down for nine years, making him spend his money and yet she knew she was possessed and hid it from him. What the serpent in her does is that, each time she conceives, after a month or two, it eats up the fertilized egg spiritually which results in a miscarriage in the physical. This has beengoing on for nine years.Because healthcare involves confidentiality, I took her into another room in my office and told her she has a spiritual serpent and is possessed, that I have seen the mark. Her husband was still in my consulting room, I was alone with her in that room. She broke down and confessed. I sent her for deliverance, she was exorcised. Today she is six months pregnant, and will have her baby. Yes, nine years without a child. She was even destined to be barren forever by demons. I knew because I am telepathic, to some extent. Most of the times I dream a lot and I don't dream useless dreams. Everything that is revealed to me happens.CatholicI am a Catholic, a Catholic by marriage, I was bom an Anglican. I was bom into the Anglican Communion, I was baptized there, I did confirmation there, I received the holy communion, everything, then I married a Catholic and I became a Catholic.
